Fitrah of Faith
Need and connection: where religion begins in the soul, and how a servant is bound to their Lord.
Fitrah of Created Nature
Body and identity: what male and female were created upon, and marriage relations.
Fitrah of Character
Conscience and standard: character comes before conduct, and standard before choice.
The Reality of Fitrah: Primordial Constitution
The Arabic word fitrah turns on meanings of originating on no prior model and cleaving open. In the human being, it signifies the primordial constitution prior to the influences of upbringing and environment.
Fitrah is not an alternative to Revelation, nor Revelation to fitrah. Fitrah is the prepared recipient, and Revelation is the guiding light.
Distinctions Between Fitrah and Related Terms
Much contemporary confusion arises from conflating five terms that differ fundamentally.
Primordial constitution from God, prior to habit, inclined toward truth and good.
Material physical laws devoid of moral accountability or spiritual direction.
Biological urges like hunger and sex; fitrah is the moral compass that regulates them.
Learned behaviour from repetition and environment; does not become fitrah by familiarity.
Self-conception and belonging; fitrah is the objective root shielding identity from fluidity.
Fitrah of Faith · Need and Connection
The primordial inclination in the human heart toward faith in God, feeling the intrinsic need to worship Him and rely upon Him.
In moments of distress when false reliances fall away, in the innate existential quest for purpose, and in inner tranquility near God.
Deepheedlessness, arrogance born of technological reliance, and accumulated unaddressed doubts.
Through consistent worship, contemplating divine signs, and building intellectual immunity through sound foundational knowledge.
Fitrah of Created Nature · Body and Identity
The physical, psychological, and sexual constitution upon which God fashioned humankind, and the complementary duality between male and female.
In complementary attraction within marriage, maternal and paternal care, physical modesty, and contentment in one’s created sex.
Gender confusion, commodification of the human body, family breakdown, and erosion of modesty.
Educating the body as a trust from God, channelling desires into marriage, fostering healthy modesty, and early balanced guidance for youth.
Fitrah of Character · Conscience and Standard
The innate recognition of good and evil, justice and injustice, truth and falsehood. A moral code woven into conscience, completed by divine Revelation.
In the soul’s recoil from deceit and injustice, inner pangs of remorse, and the inseparability of genuine worship from moral character.
Utilitarianism treating ethics as conditional on interest, desensitisation through regular exposure to vice, and unprincipled success models.
Self-examination, treating truthfulness as worship, living parental role-modelling, and rewarding integrity.
